Initial consultation
Our first meeting is an opportunity to explore your reasons for coming to therapy, to clarify your hopes and expectations, and for you to ask any questions you may have about the process of counselling or the way I work. It is also a chance for both of us to assess whether we feel we’re suited to work together, and there is no obligation to meet again. If we decide to continue we will agree a regular day and time for our meetings and from then on, that appointment slot will be yours.
If the decision is not to work together, then I am happy to refer you on to a counsellor who may be more suitable, or discuss other options that may be of help.
How many sessions do I need?
Counselling can be short term or open-ended, depending on your needs and what you are hoping to achieve. In short term counselling, our work usually focuses on a specific problem or supporting you through a crisis, and might just be a few sessions, but more typically between 6 to 12 sessions. In open-ended work we are able to explore issues in more depth, looking at how the past, including childhood experiences and relationships with parents and other important people, are influencing you in the present. This process can enable you to re-connect to parts of yourself that have been lost or denied, and can lead to a profound sense of being more truly your real self.
